Privacy Policy
Last updated 1 October 2026
We respect your privacy. This policy explains what personal information GenJ Church collects, why we collect it, how we look after it, and what you can ask of us. We follow the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988.
[01]Who we are
GenJ Church ("GenJ", "we", "us") is a church for young adults meeting at 88 Kooyong Road, Armadale VIC 3143. It is run by Generation Jesus Ltd (ABN 92 683 194 765), a charity registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission. This policy covers genj.com.au, our course site at courses.genj.com.au, our gatherings, groups and events, and the ways we contact you.
For anything about your privacy, email us at hello@genj.com.au.
[02]What we collect
We only collect what we need. Depending on how you connect with us, that may include:
- Contact details, such as your name, email address and phone number.
- What you tell us, such as the messages, questions and prayer requests you send.
- Course and group details, such as which Community of Disciplers course you sign up for and whether you are taking part or leading.
- Giving details, such as your name, email address, the amount and date of a gift. Your card or bank details are held by our payment provider, not by us.
- Attendance and involvement, such as the gatherings, groups and events you come to or serve at.
- Photos and video taken at our gatherings and events.
- Technical information, such as your IP address and browser, which our hosting provider records to keep the website secure, and how you use our website, such as the pages you visit, roughly where you are and the device you use, which Google Analytics records for us.
[03]Your faith is sensitive information
Under the Privacy Act, information about your religious beliefs is sensitive information. Much of what people share with a church, from attending a gathering to asking for prayer, can reveal it.
We only collect sensitive information with your consent, and only when it relates to our activities as a church. We only share it with people outside GenJ with your consent or where the law requires it.
[04]How we collect it
Almost always directly from you: when you fill in a form on our website, sign up for a course, give, email or message us, or talk with us in person.
Occasionally someone else may pass on your details, for example a friend who asks us to get in touch with you. If that happens, we will tell you how we got your details when we first contact you.
Where it is practical, you can deal with us without giving your name, for example when you come to a gathering or ask a general question.
[05]How we use it
We use your information to:
- reply to you and answer your questions,
- sign you up for courses and groups and keep you informed about them,
- process your gifts and send receipts,
- care for you pastorally, where you have asked us to,
- tell you about gatherings and events, where you have agreed to hear from us,
- keep our website and services secure, and
- meet our legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for anyone else's marketing.
[06]Emails and messages
We only send you updates you have asked for, or messages about something you are involved in, such as a course you have signed up for. Every marketing email lets you unsubscribe, and you can also email us to stop hearing from us.
[08]Information stored overseas
Some of our service providers store information outside Australia, including in the United States, where Google Analytics data is processed. We choose providers that protect personal information to a standard comparable to Australian law, and we take reasonable steps to make sure they do.
[09]Photos and video
We sometimes take photos and video at our gatherings and events and use them on our website and social media. If you would rather not appear, let one of our team know on the day or email us. If an image of you has already been published, we will remove it where we reasonably can.
[11]Keeping it safe
We take reasonable steps to protect your information from misuse, loss and unauthorised access. Access is limited to the people who need it, and we use services with strong security.
We keep information only for as long as we need it. Records of gifts are kept for as long as the law requires for financial records, which is generally seven years. When we no longer need information, we delete it or make it anonymous.
[12]Seeing and correcting your information
You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, or ask us to correct it, by emailing hello@genj.com.au. We will respond within 30 days, and there is no charge. If we cannot give you access, we will explain why.
[13]Under 18s
Our gatherings and programs are for young adults aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18 without the consent of a parent or guardian.
[14]If something goes wrong
If a data breach involving your information is likely to cause you serious harm, we will tell you as soon as we can, explain what happened and what you can do, and notify the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner where the law requires it.
[15]Questions and complaints
If you have a question or a complaint about how we have handled your information, email hello@genj.com.au. We will respond within 30 days.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au or on 1300 363 992.
[16]Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The latest version is always on this page, with the date it was last updated at the top.
